Today…Thursday, October 17, 2013, is Spirit Day. Click here to learn more about it!
Please wear something PURPLE today to send a statement that you are taking a stand against bullying and that you support young people who happen to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Many of our youth have had their lives disrupted or tragically lost to suicide because of bullying and/or from the negative effects of some type of bullying, all simply for being who they are! In five little words: It all needs to stop!
It’s timely that the annual Spirit Day, an ideal that was the brainchild of a high school youngster named Brittany McMillan in 2010, comes nearly a full week later from the annual National Coming Out Day, which was observed last Friday, October 11. I encourage each of you to read my article about that day here. I offer a bit more than just a simple observance speech. You may learn a few things that could prove beneficial to you or someone you know who is now – or who has been bullied for being a LGBT youngster. There are also a couple of helpful resources there to check out. Please… click here to read National Coming Out Day 2013.
Now, it bears repeating: Find something PURPLE today – the shade of purple does not matter – to wear on your body and/or to pin to or on your shirt, sweater or jacket to show your support of Spirit Day and to remember those youth who simply didn’t have the love, the courage, the support and/or the resources to help them endure the challenges of coming out as – and being a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender – or anything other than an “expected” heterosexual human being.
As I travel the streets of Saginaw, Michigan today I hope to see many of you proudly showing your support for Spirit Day. Who knows; you may be supporting someone you know unawares.
